Thais’ new leader says he wants to be a good leader
THAIAPE, Thailand (AP) Thailand’s new leader is calling for a crackdown on corruption and saying he wants the country to be an example for others to follow.
Thailand has a long tradition of corruption, and President Prayuth Chan-ocha wants to clean it up.
He says the country is ready to tackle corruption, but he needs to be able to do it himself.
He is a former lawyer who spent more than 20 years working as an attorney.
He has been in office for less than two months and is seeking re-election next year.
The president is in the midst of a campaign for the country’s first civilian prime minister since 1989, but his opponents are calling for him to step down.
The National Election Commission said on Tuesday that Prayut Chan-o-cha would be the next prime minister, after the election is held in April.
It said he would be sworn in on March 31.
His opponent, former opposition leader Thaksin Shinawatra, has said he is ready for a new round of talks with the government.
